I met Martin at a job fair when I was desperate to find a job. I asked him to help me improve my resume, and after reading it, he just said that we should talk. Martin saw something in me that I wasn’t seeing or conveying in my resume. Ten years later, I still haven’t had a 9-5 job because I’ve been busy – and enjoying – running my cosmetology business and taking on new clients all the time. I still bounce new ideas off of him and his team first

I told Martin that I just want to detail cars, that I don’t want all these other business headaches. So he listened, asked some questions about my business and the industry, and called back with a solution: He said that as an entrepreneur, I don’t have to do all the back-office functions, though I do have to know about them. Martin must have an endless supply of possible solutions in his head all the time. During a meeting with him, our team had a little fun at his expense by asking arbitrary questions unrelated to the business issues we hired his team to help us fix. He took it in stride, offered suggestions and recommendations, and ended up streamlining parts of our business that we hadn’t even realized needed attention. And he was professional about it

When I launched Just Cookies… I worked out of a shared commercial kitchen and could only use the space on certain days of the week. It didn’t matter when I called for help, Martin showed up, placed and paid for a cookie order, and then walked me through the many business functions needed to get going. He even referred me to his professional network for legal and tax matters he didn’t handle himself

When we called Martin with our first emergency – our payroll system wasn’t functioning and workers were standing in front of us waiting for checks – he walked our office administrator through a correction over the phone, never having seen our system or setup. Once payroll was out the door, we immediately contracted his company to help us clean up our office operations. He is patient, compassionate, upfront and thorough

Our first “consultation” with Martin was dinner at his house. He cooked, didn’t let us lift a finger to clean and gave us star treatment all evening. When we got down to business, my partner and I realized that this was simply the way he lived and conducted business. He does the heavy lifting, and we found that out when he set up our Quickbooks Online account and checked in every quarter to see how things were going during our first two years in business
